Dinner wars: Pie and Mash vs Toad in the Hole

It is on. The time has come for the ultimate battle of the comfort food dishes! There is something about carbs on carbs that we need to get us through the dark and cold winter months in this glorious country. As a nation, we’re proud of our traditional comforting grub and this edition has us mulling over the distinct advantages each of these classic dishes have and whether Pie and Mash or Toad in the Hole come out on top (with very little bias 🤣)!

The preference for "Pie and Mash" over "Toad in the Hole" is, of course, completely subjective and depends on individual tastes. However, for those who appreciate the comforting and hearty qualities of Pie and Mash, here are a few reasons why some might argue it's superior (in every way).
Veggie tagine pie
Rich Flavours: Although different types of sausages, with varying seasoning profiles, can be used to make a Toad in the Hole, a pie fill has so many different elements to it, whether you opt for a veggie or meat-stuffed pie. The depth of flavour is almost always superior and the way this complements a buttered mash is perfection itself.
Texture Contrast: The crisp golden crust of a meat pie (or a veggie one!) provides a delightful textural contrast to the creamy mashed potatoes. This interplay of textures enhances the overall eating experience.
Cultural Significance 🤓: Pie and Mash has strong historical ties to London's East End and has been a staple comfort food for generations. Its cultural significance and the sense of tradition associated with it might resonate with individuals who appreciate culinary heritage.
Versatility of Pie Fillings: The versatility of pie fillings allows for a wide range of flavours and variations. Whether you reach for a Steak & Ale or a creamy Mushroom Stroganott Pie, the possibilities for creativity and diverse taste experiences are vast. There are also a multitude of sides that compliment pies beautifully! The culinary world is your oyster with a pie!

Nostalgia and Tradition ❤️: For many, Pie and Mash is a dish that evokes nostalgia and a sense of tradition. It's often linked to fond memories of family meals and communal gatherings.
Olfactory delight 👃: There’s nothing quite like the smell of a pie cooking in the oven (or air fryer) and that’s something that Toad in the Hole cannot compete with!
Satisfaction: You'll be satisfied for hours after a meat-stuffed pie with oodles of mash, instead of simply filling a little hole until snack time!
Does all that evidence suffice?... While Toad in the Hole has its own unique appeal with the comforting combination of sausages and crispy batter (and we certainly wouldn't turn it down!), ultimately, the choice to eat pie is one we’d make over and over again. Who’s with us?
