As we’re officially in spring and we’re nearing Summer (hooray!!) there are some more colourful options to choose from when deciding what to plonk on your plate with a pie or pasty. Here’s our quick round up of May’s top seasonal veggie picks. Buying veg in season is better for the planet and better for your wallet!
If you can get them at the local farmer’s market then that’s a bonus 👏

In season this month:

Spring cabbages
Spring onions

Asparagus Advice
We’d really recommend asparagus as a spring side – even better cooked on a barbecue or in a griddle pan. Whip up a super simple dressing with lemon juice, olive oil and seasoning and you’re away! Great with chicken and mushroom pies 👌
Radish Recommendation
Radishes are a fantastic addition to any salad and this crisp, peppery veg compliments a pasty beautifully. Lettuce and rocket are also both in season for May and a great basis for any summery side! Plate up with a warm cheese and onion pasty or steak pasty, drizzle with your favourite dressing and enjoy.

Spinach Suggestion
Serving suggestion. A plate with spinach salad with a hot pie and sweet potato fries
Now, as well as being Popeye’s fave, spinach is a superfood meaning that it is extremely nutrient rich (with bags of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, iron, folate, and potassium to name a few!). So if you munch on it regularly it will stave off illness!
Serve up your hot pie with some sweet potato fries and a nutritious spinach salad with thinly sliced apple and red onion, some fresh green peas, sweet cherry tomatoes and a few toasted pine nuts.
It’s also scrumptious with a generous knob of butter (or vegan spread) and pairs wonderfully wilted with our curry filled bakes – kickin’ chicken pie, spicy jack pie, or the Ruby Murray Curry pasty
