Seasonal Sides to pair with your Pasty or Pie

September Seasonal Produce
Traditionally harvest season, September is one of the most bountiful times of the year. Veggies are sprouting up all over the shop currently and it pays dividends to hunt for seasonal produce in the shops and markets. Add these ingredients to your plate to make the most of the scrumptious UK-grown veg that is being dug up now.

Fennel
This fragrant veg will add the flavour of aniseed to your dish. Throw some fresh fennel in the oven to roast with your potato wedges to spice up your pie night or couple with walnuts and leaves to create a fancy side salad.
Fennel is traditionally paired with fish but also goes brilliantly with chicken – try with chicken, leek and bacon pie or chicken and mushroom pie.

Courgette
Courgettes are grown in abundance as we approach autumn. If you have a glut from the garden or allotment then there’s all sorts of great recipes you could try. If they’re straight from the ground, then they’re great sautéed with a bit of lemon. For a simple side salad to pair with a pasty we recommend using a peeler to make ribbons and toss in an easy dressing along with butter beans.
Courgettes compliment most pie choices so give it a go with a cheesy homity pie or the ultimate steak pie!

Cauliflower
There’s always the British staple of cauliflower cheese that’ll be banging with a steak and ale pie but if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous then you could break it into florets with parsley and grated carrot, and dress to create a wholesome side salad. It could also be made into cauliflower rice or cous cous in the food processor then devoured with the kickin’ chicken pie!
