But before you tuck in, let’s answer the question people ALWAYS ask:
“Homity Pie… what on earth is that?”
Well, pull up a chair. We’re going back in time, because this unassuming, lidless wonder has one of the most interesting backstories in pie history...
What IS a Homity Pie?
A proper Homity Pie is an open-topped veggie pie packed with soft potato, onions, leeks, herbs and cheese, the kind of cosy, humble, no-faff dish that tastes like a warm jumper on a cold day.
Our take?
Golden shortcrust pastry, creamy potato filling, buttery leeks, sweet onions and a cheesy top that hits the spot every single time!!
But to understand why it exists, we need to travel back a bit…
The Origins of the Homity Pie: A Wartime Hero
It’s widely believed that the Homity Pie began life during World War II. Meat was scarce, rations were strict and British cooks had to become VERY inventive.
But don't worry, the Women’s Land Army, (the Land Girls as we know them today) saved the day!!
These incredible women worked the fields to keep Britain fed, and their meals had to be both filling and affordable. Plus due to scarcity, they really had to be made from whatever the farm had plenty of!
Pastry? If you saved enough butter rations.
The result? A simple, hearty, open pie that ticked all the boxes. Comforting. Nourishing. Reliable... The Homity Pie was born!
(A pie born out of necessity, and one that stuck.)
The Revival: How UK Hippie Subculture and Vegetarians Saved the Homity Pie
Fast forwarding to the 1960s–70s, the Homity Pie started popping up again... this time in the hands of early veggie pioneers!
One of the biggest champions?
Cranks, the iconic vegetarian restaurant and bakery in London, famous for wholesome, back-to-basics food.
Their Homity Pie became a cult favourite:
rustic, filling, and perfect for the peace-and-love crowd who adored anything earthy, honest and veg-forward!
From there, it spread to cafes, farm shops, cookbooks and country kitchens across Britain, especially in the West Country, where hearty veg pies have always been the way of things.
Why It Belongs in the Chunk Hall of Fame
